There are many other factors you may decide to define—the more detailed the better!

It's also important to determine how your customer interacts with your product or service.

  • Where does your customer buy your product/use your service? (eg. online or in-store)

  • When does your customer buy your product/use your service? (eg. seasonally, situationally)

  • Why does your customer buy your product/use your service? (eg. what has to happen in the life of your customer for her/him to buy your product?)

  • How does your customer buy your product/use your service? (eg. what is your customer's buying strategy?)

Once you clearly define these characteristics, it’ll be easier for you to tailor your business to your customers’ needs.

Create a community

Humans naturally enjoy feeling like a part of something, and it's no different when it comes to the companies and brands they give their business to.

Creating a community looks different for everyone, but it might mean moving to the online space and creating a Facebook group where customers can interact with each other, showing behind-the-scenes glimpses of your biz or engaging with customers through social media (comments, live videos, polls, Q&As, etc.).

In-person community-building might include hosting events or workshops, getting involved with local causes and initiatives or simply seeking input and encouraging conversation with your customers.

Build a brand

Building a strong brand that customers can recognize and identify with is hugely important for attracting customers and keeping them invested (also known as brand loyalty).

When building a brand, there are a few key points to keep in mind:

  • Be consistent. Try not to change your logo, look, or key messaging once it's been established. This can be confusing for customers and render your brand unrecognizable.

  • Be authentic. Your brand should be as honest and transparent as possible—especially when it comes to factors like sourcing, ingredients, process, company culture and the people behind the business).

  • Choose your platform wisely. Once you figure out who your customers are including which social media platforms they’re using (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter), show up consistently for them on there. You don't need to be on every single social media platform or app, just the ones where your customers are.

Ask for feedback

The quickest way to lose a customer is to ignore their feedback entirely. The best way to keep them? Ask for it!

Never be afraid to ask your customers for an honest review or constructive feedback of your business. If it’s a positive experience, ask them to write an online review or recommend you to a potential customer.

Many people don't realize how powerful a positive review, a Facebook like or an Instagram follow can be, and it's an easy (and free!) way for them to support you.

When asking for feedback, you should also be willing to make improvements or address any issues that arise. Take the time to read all reviews and reply if necessary.
