With over 30 years of experience, Doug’s specialty lies in working with high net worth business owners and professionals who wish to minimize taxes while preserving their wealth. He is the Founder and Senior Financial Advisor at Granite Financial Group, overseeing and guiding the strategy as well as managing his own portfolio of clients. Beginning his career in the corporate world (spending 13 years supporting a large Canadian Chartered Bank), Doug decided to return to his roots as an entrepreneur in 2002. This led to the creation of Granite Financial in 2002. Granite serves clients across Canada. Doug is proud to be involved with organizations in Manitoba, most notably, he is currently a Board Member of the Winnipeg RBC Convention Centre, and is a Founding Partner of Next Chapter Succession Planning. Doug is has a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours), and is a Chartered Investment Manager (CIM), Registered Financial Consultant (RFC), and Certified Financial Planner (CFP).
Why did you decide to go into your profession?
I have always had an interest in financial planning and wealth management. My time at the Bank reinforced this interest. As i grew up in an entrepreneurial family i always had the urge to be independent and operate my own business.
Tell us about your work.
I operate an independent planning and wealth management firm with clients across Canada. Our focus is ensuring each client has a plan and that we prioritize what is missing in this plan for the client to meet their objectives. Many of the strategies we recommend are also strategies that we implement in our personal financial planning. We are also a comprehensive service where we provide the client with independent advice on whatever is required whether it be sophisticated tax minimization strategies retirement planning goals insurance management and wealth management. We are not biased to offer certain company's products and services however have at our fingertips whatever is the best tool in the toolbox to meet the need.
How did you come to join your organization?
I left the bank in early 2002 and established Granite Financial Group Inc in that year.
Who has been the biggest influence on your career?
My mother who was an entrepreneurial and demonstrated all the qualities that i admire in a successful person.

Great listening skills to ensure we understand what the needs of our clients are.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Helping people in meeting their goals. It is interesting as I have a broad client base of people in various businesses and professions who all need help.
What's your best advice for a new professional in your field?
Do the right thing! Your reputation is like your signature as it should never be compromised. Be focused have a written plan with goals. Understand your value system and do not be afraid to ask for the business.
